Plasma Ion Nitriding or Glow-discharge Nitriding is a method of surface hardening using glow-discharge technology to introduce nascent / elemental nitrogen to the surface of a metal part for subsequent diffusion into the material. The key difference between gas and plasma ion nitriding is the mechanism of delivering nascent nitrogen into the surface of the workpiece. High-voltage electrical energy is used to form a low-pressure ionized gas /plasma containing nitrogen ions that are accelerated to impinge on the workpiece. This ion bombardment heats the workpiece, cleans the surface, and supplies atomic nitrogen to the surface. Ion nitriding, when compared to gas nitriding, offers more precise control of the nitrogen supply at the workpiece surface. When the reaction is properly controlled, the hardened case obtained is similar to a liquid nitride case.
